Location and Operations of the Hatchery

Since the evaluation report for the planned construction was finalized the change has been made that the developer has now added a hatchery to be used in future farming operations.

By including a hatchery in the project it will be possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the production process, as it will not be required to transport hatchery long distances over land as was originally planned.

It can also be assumed that the probability of smolt mortality will be reduced, which would have occurred during shipping. Furthermore the company sees opportunities in utilizing excess water coming to the Vestmannaeyjar municipality, which would otherwise go to waste in municipal water tanks’ overflow.

The company Strandvegur 104 ehf. plans on constructing 15000 m2 housing located by the harbor.

In total the hatchery will cover six thousand square meters.
